The inaugural Safaricom Marathon was held in August 2000. The primary aim of the marathon is to raise funds for conservation and community development projects in a place called Lewa. Lewa is 225 km North of Nairobi city.
In 2007, the event started targeting raising funds to help other communities of Kenya apart from the Lewa community. The proceeds for this year’s event, as in previous years, will continue to be invested in diverse range of initiatives benefitting sustainable development, education, healthcare and wildlife.
In 2009, a record USD 500,000 was raised. These funds have been allocated to several community development, health, conservation and education projects all over Kenya.
This year, the marathon attracted 1,000 runners. Out of this number, 850 participated in the half marathon while 150 tackled the full marathon. In addition, there was Children’s 5km fun run that saw a record entry of 150 participants. Some of the world’s best long distance running athletes who participated in the event included Catherine Ndereba Boston Marathon Champion.
Safaricom Marathon, named one of the toughest in the world, attracted 200 International participants from the US, UK, Sweden, Denmark, France, South Africa, Malawi, Tanzania, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Zimbabwe, Norway and Spain.
Description of the day
All participants woke up as early as 5:00am on the day of the race to prepare. The children’s race began at 6:45pm while the full and half marathon began at 7:30am. The starting point was packed with runners who were very excited. Runners had to wait for signal to start as helicopters had to make sure the race track is clear. When the start signal was given it was a sea of humans racing to the finish point in the wilderness.
Result of the event
The winner of full marathon took 2hrs 22minuntes while the winners of half marathon took 1hr 07 minutes. The race being very tough some people did not finish. The entire LG runners of 10 participants finished the half marathon. The first person in LG team finished half marathon in 2hrs 38minutes. The finish line was full of medics to assist runners. There were also approximately 500 spectators at the finish line to cheer the runners. The event was televised live by one of the major television channels in Kenya. Also present at the finish line were government official and Safaricom top management. Thereafter was prize giving ceremony with music in the park.
This is the second time LG Electronics is participating in Safaricom Marathon. LG Electronics plans to take part in forthcoming Marathon editions since the company has recognized that the importance of this event in promoting sports, conserving the environment and assisting various communities in Kenya.
Expected effect from this Event
Safaricom Marathon is a very popular event. It draws the attention of athletes, spectators and also local and international media.
In taking part in the Safaricom Lewa Marathon for two consecutive years, LG Electronics has proved that it is conscious of the needs of the local community. By co-sponsoring the events through awarding of television sets (LCD and PDP) and top range mobile phones to the winners, LG has demonstrated its commitment in promoting sports in Kenya.
Considering the large turnout of athletes and spectators at the Safaricom Marathon, LG has enhanced it brand identity both locally and internationally. LG will also hugely benefit from outstanding media coverage due to overwhelming local and international media presence at the event.
